Ground Mulch

Ground mulch is a landscape product that many people do not pay attention to. When you stop and look around this product is used in a lot of different ways. The basic concept is to cover the ground protecting the topsoil or plants planted in an area. In some cases ground mulch is decorative with various colors and textures.  In others the main intent is functional, like preventing maintenance equipment from hitting the tree trunks the mulch surrounds as a buffer.

Protection of the topsoil is done in two major ways. One is to buffer to temperature changes both in the summer and the winter. This can protect delicate plants from frost and heat stress. A 4” layer of mulch provides a more constant temperature range for the roots, perennials and bulbs planted in the area. Being a non-living ground cover there is not the competition for water with the other plants it surrounds. Ground mulch acts to shade the soil and preserve the water content by preventing wicking of the moisture out of the soil. Then over time as the ground mulch decays it enriches the soil below it.

Lawn Maintenance.

A wood mulch ground cover can both protect the plants it surrounds and speed up the maintenance process. Many commercial installations utilize this dual feature. The shape and scale of the bed created by the mulch bed can also control the visual presentation of the space. Large trees can be off set by a mulched circle around the base and being in beds that are mulched to prevent being mowed or trampled can protect delicate spring flowers. Trimming of the grass moves out to the edge where the mulch bed ends not up against the trunk of the tree or other planting.  Lawns gain definition when areas do not support good grass growth and a set transition line is edged between the two areas. Mulching with wood chips over a properly constructed bed can result in many hours of labor saved and who has any extra time around the house any more.

Decorative Mulching

Decorative features of ground mulch are both texture and color. Scale of both the plants in the area and the total area covered can effect what size ground mulch is selected. For most woody plants and typical planting areas ground wood mulch is used in fits the right look. Low growing annuals and some vegetables are more suited to fine small particle mulch like buckwheat hulls or some other fine material. To create a visual “look” to the mulched beds different colors of mulch are available.

Rooted in royalty, organic gardening blossoms

Excerpt below;
“Organic gardeners prize a healthy, interwoven ecosystem. They enrich the soil with compost and other organic matter instead of synthetic fertilizers. They control weeds the old-fashioned way - with mulch and elbow grease - and consider most insects good guys, not "pests" to be nuked.”

Will that vegetable garden save the Obamas money?

Peter Grier of the Monitor’s Washington Bureau speculates that one of the goals of the much-publicized White House kitchen garden is to save the first family money on its grocery bills. If so, they’re part of a growing trend. The ranks of those growing their own veggies have increased by 20 to 30 percent over the past two years.
